Oven to Air Guide

Air Fryer Filet Mignon: Time and Temperature

By Updated Last reviewed How we calculate

Cook a 1½-inch filet mignon in the air fryer at 400°F (205°C) for 10–12 minutes, flipping halfway, then rest it for 5 minutes. In a conventional oven the same steak takes about 14 minutes at 425°F. Go by internal temperature, not the clock.

How the oven directions convert

These air fryer directions come straight from the oven to air fryer converter using its “Thick meat & roasts” setting:

425°F − 25°F = 400°F · 14 min × 0.85 = 12 min · check at 10 min

Air fryers vary by model and basket load, so start checking at 10 minutes.

Step by step

  1. Pat the steaks dry, rub with a little oil and season well with salt and pepper.
  2. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (205°C).
  3. Cook for 10–12 minutes, flipping halfway.
  4. Check the center with an instant-read thermometer, then rest for 5 minutes before slicing.

How to tell it’s done

Beef and pork steaks, chops and roasts are safe at 145°F (63°C) followed by a 3-minute rest. Check with an instant-read thermometer in the thickest part; see theFoodSafety.gov safe minimum temperature chart.

Tips

  • Let the steaks sit out for 20–30 minutes so the center cooks evenly.
  • Thinner 1-inch filets need about 2–3 minutes less; 2-inch filets about 3–4 minutes more.
  • For a deeper crust, finish with a minute in a hot pan with butter.

Accuracy and limitations

These times are starting points built from typical oven directions, converted with the same rules as the calculator. They are not lab measurements, and your food and appliance will differ.

  • Appliances vary. Wattage, basket size and how close the element sits to the food change cooking speed. That’s why every result includes a “check at” time.
  • Load matters. A full or stacked basket cooks more slowly than a single layer.
  • Temperature limits. Many basket air fryers stop at 400°F (200°C). Converted settings above that are flagged.
  • Poor fits for any formula: wet batters, delicate cakes, low-and-slow recipes and roasts over an hour. Use a thermometer and expect to adjust.
  • Food safety comes from internal temperature, not time. Check meat, poultry, seafood and leftovers against the USDA safe minimum temperatures.
  • Packaging wins. If your box prints air fryer directions, follow them.

Frequently asked questions

How long do you cook filet mignon in the air fryer?

For a 1½-inch steak, 10–12 minutes at 400°F, flipping halfway. Check the internal temperature and rest it for 5 minutes.

What internal temperature should filet mignon reach?

The USDA safe minimum for beef steaks is 145°F (63°C) with a 3-minute rest. Many cooks take filet off earlier, around 130–135°F, for medium-rare; carryover heat adds a few degrees as it rests.

Do I need to sear filet mignon before air frying?

No. The air fryer browns the outside well on its own. A quick sear in butter afterwards adds a richer crust if you want it.

Times are starting points; air fryers vary. Always check doneness with a thermometer. Want everything on one page? See the air fryer cooking times chart.
