Air fryer vs oven
By AnoyUpdated Last reviewed How we calculate
An air fryer is a small, powerful convection oven. It preheats in a few minutes, cooks about 20% faster and makes food crisper, but holds far less. A conventional oven is slower and less crisp, but it handles big batches, whole roasts and bakes. To move a recipe between them, change the temperature by 25°F (15°C) and the time by about 20%.
| Air fryer | Conventional oven | |
|---|---|---|
| How it heats | Small chamber, strong fan, element just above the food | Large chamber, mostly still air (unless fan/convection) |
| Preheat | 2–5 minutes | 10–15 minutes |
| Cooking speed | About 20% faster | Baseline |
| Crispness | Excellent, close to deep-fried | Good, best on a wire rack |
| Capacity | One layer in a 3–8 quart basket | Several trays, whole roasts |
| Max temperature | Often 400°F (200°C) | Usually 500–550°F (260–290°C) |
| Best for | Fries, wings, frozen foods, reheating | Big batches, roasts, bread, cakes |
When the air fryer wins
- Small portions for one to three people.
- Anything you want crisp: fries, wings, breaded foods, roasted vegetables.
- Frozen snacks and reheating leftovers (it revives fries and pizza where a microwave makes them soggy).
- Hot days, when you don’t want to heat the kitchen.
When the oven wins
- Feeding a crowd, or cooking several dishes at once.
- Whole chickens, large roasts and casseroles.
- Bread, cakes and cookies by the tray, which need even, gentle heat and space.
- Anything above 400°F (200°C), the limit of many basket air fryers.
Which is cheaper to run?
For a small meal, usually the air fryer: it heats a few quarts instead of a whole oven cavity, preheats in minutes and finishes sooner. Check your appliances’ wattage and your electricity rate for an exact figure. For a big batch that would take several air fryer rounds, one oven run can come out ahead.

Oven to air fryer: lower the temperature by 25°F (15°C) and multiply the time by 0.8, using the oven to air fryer converter. Air fryer to oven: add 25°F (15°C) and multiply the time by 1.25, using the air fryer to oven converter.
Frequently asked questions
Is an air fryer better than an oven?
For small portions of crispy food, yes: it is faster and crisper. For large batches, whole roasts, trays of cookies or several dishes at once, the oven is better.
Does an air fryer use less electricity than an oven?
Usually, for small portions. It heats a much smaller space and cooks faster, so it often uses less energy per meal. For a large batch, a single oven run can be more efficient than several air fryer batches.
Can an air fryer replace an oven?
For one or two people, it can handle most everyday cooking. It struggles with large cakes, big roasts and anything that needs a lot of space.
Is food from an air fryer healthier than from the oven?
Roughly the same. Both use little oil. The big health difference is versus deep frying, not versus oven baking.
