How long to preheat an air fryer
By AnoyUpdated Last reviewed How we calculate
Preheat a basket air fryer for about 3 minutes at the temperature you will cook at. Smaller models need 2 minutes; large and oven-style air fryers need 4–5. If your model has no preheat button, just run it empty for that long. Skip it for reheating and add 2–3 minutes to the cook time instead.
| Air fryer type | Preheat time |
|---|---|
| Small basket (2–4 qt) | 2–3 minutes |
| Medium basket (5–6 qt) | 3 minutes |
| Large or dual basket (7+ qt) | 3–5 minutes |
| Air fryer toaster oven / oven-style | 4–6 minutes |
Higher temperatures take a little longer. Your manual’s preheat time is the best guide for your model.
When preheating matters
- Worth it: steaks, chops, chicken with skin, breaded foods, frozen fries and snacks. A hot start sets the crust before the inside overcooks.
- Optional: reheating leftovers, vegetables, anything you will shake several times.
- Lower and shorter: cakes and bakes. Preheat to the lower converted temperature so the top doesn’t set before the middle.
How to preheat
- Make sure the basket is empty: no parchment, foil or liners.
- Set the cooking temperature and run the air fryer for 3 minutes (or press Preheat).
- Add the food, plus any liner weighed down by the food, and start the cook time.
Preheating and converted recipes
The times from the oven to air fryer converter assume a preheated air fryer, just as oven recipes assume a preheated oven. If you start cold, add 2–3 minutes and check doneness rather than trusting the clock.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to preheat an air fryer?
About 3 minutes for most basket air fryers. Small models can be ready in 2 minutes; large or oven-style air fryers and settings near 400°F can take 4–5.
Do you have to preheat an air fryer?
Not always, but it helps. Preheating gives a better crust on meat, breaded and frozen foods. For reheating or delicate foods it matters less; add 2–3 minutes if you start cold.
How do I preheat an air fryer without a preheat button?
Set the temperature you will cook at, run it empty for about 3 minutes, then add the food. Do not put parchment or foil in during the empty preheat.
Can I put parchment paper in while preheating?
No. With nothing on top, the fan can lift a liner into the heating element. Add liners together with the food, after preheating.
