About 330°F. Start checking at 22 minutes.

180°C − 15°C = 165°C · 30 min × 0.8 = 24 min · check at 22 min

Shake or flip halfway for even browning.

To convert a gas mark recipe to the air fryer, turn the gas mark into °C, lower it by 15°C and multiply the time by 0.8. Gas mark 4 (180°C) becomes 165°C in the air fryer, and gas mark 6 (200°C) becomes 185°C. A 30-minute bake becomes 24 minutes.

The calculator works in °C or °F. Find your gas mark’s temperature in the chart below and enter it.

The formula

  1. Gas mark → °C using the standard UK table (gas mark 4 = 180°C, 6 = 200°C).
  2. Air fryer temperature = oven temperature − 25°F (or − 15°C), rounded to the nearest 5°.
  3. Air fryer time = oven time × 0.8 (20% less). By food type: Most recipes × 0.8, Thin & crispy × 0.75, Vegetables × 0.75, Thick meat & roasts × 0.85, Cakes & bakes × 0.85, Frozen food × 0.8.
  4. Check at = oven time × 0.75, rounded down.

Worked example: 180°C − 15°C = 165°C · 30 min × 0.8 = 24 min · check at 22 min

Results above 400°F (200°C) get a warning, because many basket air fryers stop there. Method version 1.1. Why these numbers: methodology.

Is a gas oven different from an electric one?

For conversion purposes, no. Gas and conventional electric ovens both heat with still air, so the same −15°C, × 0.8 rule applies. Two differences are worth knowing: gas ovens are usually hotter at the top than the bottom, and their heat is slightly moister, which is why gas-oven recipes sometimes brown less. An air fryer evens both out.

If your recipe gives a fan temperature as well as a gas mark, use the fan figure in the air fryer unchanged: see fan oven to air fryer.

Accuracy and limitations

The arithmetic is exact: the same function produces the calculator result, every chart on this site and the printable chart. The cooking result is an estimate, because the formula cannot see your appliance or your food.

  • Appliances vary. Wattage, basket size and how close the element sits to the food change cooking speed. That’s why every result includes a “check at” time.
  • Load matters. A full or stacked basket cooks more slowly than a single layer.
  • Temperature limits. Many basket air fryers stop at 400°F (200°C). Converted settings above that are flagged.
  • Poor fits for any formula: wet batters, delicate cakes, low-and-slow recipes and roasts over an hour. Use a thermometer and expect to adjust.
  • Food safety comes from internal temperature, not time. Check meat, poultry, seafood and leftovers against the USDA safe minimum temperatures.

Frequently asked questions

What is gas mark 4 in an air fryer?

Gas mark 4 is 180°C (350°F). In the air fryer use 165°C (325°F) and multiply the time by 0.8.

What is gas mark 6 in an air fryer?

Gas mark 6 is 200°C (400°F). In the air fryer use 185°C (375°F) and cut the time by 20%.

What is gas mark 7 in an air fryer?

Gas mark 7 is 220°C (425°F). That converts to 205°C (400°F) in the air fryer. Many models stop at 200°C, so use 200°C if yours does, cut the time by 20% and check a few minutes early.

Do gas ovens need a different conversion?

No. A gas oven heats with still air like a conventional electric oven, so the same rule applies: lower by 15°C (25°F) and multiply the time by 0.8. Gas ovens are often hotter near the top, so recipes may have been tested on the middle shelf.

What gas mark is 180°C fan?

A fan temperature of 180°C corresponds to roughly 195–200°C conventional, which is about gas mark 5–6. For the air fryer, simply use 180°C.
