About 420°F. Start checking at 18 minutes.

230°C − 15°C = 215°C · 25 min × 0.8 = 20 min · check at 18 min

Shake or flip halfway for even browning.

A 230°C oven recipe goes in the air fryer at 215°C (420°F), with the cooking time cut by 20%. So 230°C for 25 minutes becomes 215°C for 20 minutes. In Fahrenheit, 230°C is 446°F, or gas mark 8.

Many basket air fryers top out at 200°C. If yours can’t reach 215°C, set it to its maximum and start checking a few minutes early.

The formula

  1. Air fryer temperature = oven temperature − 25°F (or − 15°C), rounded to the nearest 5°.
  2. Air fryer time = oven time × 0.8 (20% less). By food type: Most recipes × 0.8, Thin & crispy × 0.75, Vegetables × 0.75, Thick meat & roasts × 0.85, Cakes & bakes × 0.85, Frozen food × 0.8.
  3. Check at = oven time × 0.75, rounded down.

Worked example: 400°F − 25°F = 375°F · 25 min × 0.8 = 20 min · check at 18 min

Results above 400°F (200°C) get a warning, because many basket air fryers stop there. Method version 1.1. Why these numbers: methodology.

Every row below is 230°C in the oven and 215°C in the air fryer. The time cut depends on the food: thin, crispy foods finish sooner, while thick meat and cakes need closer to their full time.

230°C in Fahrenheit, fan and gas mark

230°C expressed in other units and oven types
Conventional oven230°C = 446°F (recipes use 450°F)
Fan / convection oven420°F / 215°C fan
Gas ovenGas mark 8
Air fryer215°C / 420°F

The fan figure uses the same rule as the air fryer, because both cook with moving air. If a recipe already gives a fan or convection temperature, use it in the air fryer unchanged and only shorten the time by about 10%: see convection oven to air fryer or fan oven to air fryer.

Why 230°C becomes 215°C

An air fryer is a small convection oven with a powerful fan. Moving air carries heat into food faster than the still air of a regular oven, so the same browning happens at a lower setting:230°C − 15°C = 215°C. The result is rounded to the nearest 5 degrees to match air fryer dials.

Accuracy and limitations

The arithmetic is exact: the same function produces the calculator result, every chart on this site and the printable chart. The cooking result is an estimate, because the formula cannot see your appliance or your food.

  • Appliances vary. Wattage, basket size and how close the element sits to the food change cooking speed. That’s why every result includes a “check at” time.
  • Load matters. A full or stacked basket cooks more slowly than a single layer.
  • Temperature limits. Many basket air fryers stop at 400°F (200°C). Converted settings above that are flagged.
  • Poor fits for any formula: wet batters, delicate cakes, low-and-slow recipes and roasts over an hour. Use a thermometer and expect to adjust.
  • Food safety comes from internal temperature, not time. Check meat, poultry, seafood and leftovers against the USDA safe minimum temperatures.

Frequently asked questions

What is 230°C in an air fryer?

A recipe written for a 230°C conventional oven converts to 215°C (about 420°F) in the air fryer, with the cooking time multiplied by 0.8. Many basket air fryers top out at 200°C; if yours can’t reach 215°C, use its maximum and check early. If the recipe already gives an air fryer temperature, keep it as it is.

How long is 20 minutes at 230°C in an air fryer?

About 16 minutes at 215°C. Start checking at 15 minutes; thin, crispy foods may be done sooner and thick cuts may need the full time.

What is 230°C in Fahrenheit?

230°C is exactly 446°F. Recipes usually treat it as 450°F. On a gas oven it is about gas mark 8.

What is 230°C in a fan oven?

Lower it by 15°C to about 215°C (420°F) fan. A fan or convection oven circulates air like an air fryer, so a fan temperature goes straight into the air fryer unchanged.

What is a 230°C air fryer recipe in the oven?

Going the other way, a 230°C air fryer recipe needs about 245°C in a conventional oven, with the time multiplied by 1.25.
