Can You Put Cardboard in the Oven or Air Fryer?
By AnoyUpdated Last reviewed How we calculate
No. Do not put cardboard in the oven or the air fryer. Paper and cardboard can char and catch fire at normal baking temperatures, and many boxes have glue, wax or printed coatings that are not made to be heated. In an air fryer the fan can also lift light cardboard into the heating element.
In the oven
No
Cardboard can scorch and ignite, especially near the elements or under the broiler. Keeping a pizza warm in its box in an oven is a common cause of kitchen fires.
In the air fryer
No
The element sits just above the food and the fan moves air hard, so light cardboard can be blown straight into it. Remove sleeves, trays and boxes before cooking.
What to avoid
- Pizza boxes, even at a “warm” setting.
- The cardboard circle under frozen pizzas.
- Microwave crisping sleeves (such as those for Hot Pockets).
- Cardboard trays from frozen meals, unless the package specifically says the tray is oven-safe.
What to use instead
- Reheat pizza on a sheet pan in the oven, or straight in the air fryer basket at about 350°F (175°C) for 3–5 minutes.
- Move frozen meals to an oven-safe dish if the tray isn’t labeled for the oven.
- Use a pizza stone, sheet pan or perforated parchment instead of the cardboard base.
Frequently asked questions
Can you put cardboard in the oven at 170°F?
It is still not recommended. Paper is unlikely to ignite at warming temperatures, but ovens cycle hotter than the dial, elements glow red, and boxes contain glues and inks not made for heat. Move food to a sheet pan instead.
What temperature does cardboard catch fire?
Paper and cardboard generally ignite somewhere around 400–450°F (205–230°C), and can scorch below that. Oven elements and broilers are far hotter than the air temperature on the dial.
Can I put a frozen pizza on its cardboard in the oven?
No. Remove the cardboard circle and the plastic wrap. Bake the pizza directly on the rack or on a sheet pan.
Can I put the Hot Pocket sleeve in the air fryer?
No. The crisping sleeve is for the microwave only. In an air fryer the fan can blow it into the heating element.
