Can You Put Glass in the Oven or Air Fryer?
By AnoyUpdated Last reviewed How we calculate
Only if the glass is labeled oven-safe. Tempered or borosilicate glass bakeware is made for the oven, and can go in an air fryer if it fits with space for air around it. Ordinary drinking glasses, glass lids and decorative glass are not oven-safe. All glass can shatter from sudden temperature changes.
In the oven
Only if labeled oven-safe
Oven-safe glass bakeware is fine in a preheated oven. Avoid the broiler and avoid moving it straight from the fridge or freezer to a hot oven.
In the air fryer
Only if labeled oven-safe
An oven-safe glass dish can work if there is room for air around it, but the element is very close. Check the manufacturer’s instructions; when in doubt, use a metal pan.
How to use glass dishes safely
- Look for “oven-safe” on the base or packaging.
- Let a chilled dish come to room temperature before it goes into the heat.
- Put the dish on a dry, room-temperature surface or trivet when it comes out, never a wet or cold one.
What to avoid
- Drinking glasses, jars and glass lids with plastic parts.
- Dishes with chips or cracks.
- Adding cold liquid to a hot glass dish.
Alternatives
- Metal cake pans and baking tins heat faster in an air fryer and can’t shatter.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if glass is oven-safe?
Look for an “oven-safe” mark or symbol on the base or packaging. If it isn’t labeled, assume it isn’t.
Why did my glass dish shatter in the oven?
Usually thermal shock: a sudden change from cold to hot, or hot to cold or wet. Avoid fridge-to-oven moves and wet countertops.
Does food take longer in a glass dish in the air fryer?
Often, yes. Glass heats more slowly than metal, so add a few minutes and check doneness with a thermometer.
