Oven to Air Guide

Can You Put Metal in the Oven or Air Fryer?

By Updated Last reviewed How we calculate

Yes. Oven-safe metal pans, cake tins, muffin tins and racks are fine in both the oven and the air fryer; metal actually heats faster than glass or ceramic. In an air fryer, choose a pan that leaves space around the edges for air, and avoid metal utensils that scratch a nonstick basket.

In the oven

Yes

Sheet pans, cast iron, stainless steel and aluminum tins are all made for the oven. Check that handles are oven-safe too.

In the air fryer

Yes

Small metal cake pans, ramekin-sized tins and racks all work. Leave space around the edges for air to circulate.

How to use metal pans safely

  • Use pans at least an inch smaller than the basket.
  • Use silicone-tipped tongs to protect a nonstick basket.
  • Remember the pan stays very hot; use oven gloves to lift it out.

What to avoid

  • Pans with plastic or wooden handles.
  • Metal in the microwave (a different appliance, with very different rules).
  • Scraping a nonstick basket with metal utensils.

Frequently asked questions

Can you put a metal bowl in the air fryer?

Yes, if it is oven-safe stainless steel and fits with room around it. Thin decorative bowls with coatings may not be.

Can you use cast iron in an air fryer?

Yes, if it fits. It is heavy and holds a lot of heat, so let it preheat with the air fryer and lift it out carefully.

Does a metal pan change the air fryer cooking time?

Slightly. Food in a pan cooks a bit slower than food on the open basket, so add 2–3 minutes and check doneness.
