Oven to Air Guide

How Long to Air Fry Chicken Wings

By Updated Last reviewed How we calculate

Air fry raw, thawed chicken wings at 400°F (205°C) for about 26 minutes, shaking or flipping every 8–10 minutes, until the skin is crisp and the meat reaches at least 165°F (74°C). Baked in a conventional oven, wings take about 35 minutes at 425°F.

How the oven directions convert

These air fryer directions come straight from the oven to air fryer converter using its “Thin & crispy” setting:

425°F − 25°F = 400°F · 35 min × 0.75 = 26 min · check at 26 min

Air fryers vary by model and basket load, so start checking at 26 minutes.

Step by step

  1. Pat the wings very dry. For extra-crisp skin, toss them with a teaspoon of baking powder and salt.
  2. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (205°C).
  3. Spread the wings in a single layer.
  4. Air fry for about 26 minutes, shaking or flipping every 8–10 minutes.
  5. Toss with sauce after cooking, not before.

How to tell it’s done

Poultry is safe at 165°F (74°C) in the thickest part. Check with an instant-read thermometer in the thickest part; see theFoodSafety.gov safe minimum temperature chart.

Tips

  • Wings are safe at 165°F, but they get more tender around 175–190°F as the connective tissue softens.
  • Frozen wings: add 6–8 minutes and separate them once they thaw in the basket.
  • Saucing before cooking burns the sugar and softens the skin.

Accuracy and limitations

These times are starting points built from typical oven directions, converted with the same rules as the calculator. They are not lab measurements, and your food and appliance will differ.

  • Appliances vary. Wattage, basket size and how close the element sits to the food change cooking speed. That’s why every result includes a “check at” time.
  • Load matters. A full or stacked basket cooks more slowly than a single layer.
  • Temperature limits. Many basket air fryers stop at 400°F (200°C). Converted settings above that are flagged.
  • Poor fits for any formula: wet batters, delicate cakes, low-and-slow recipes and roasts over an hour. Use a thermometer and expect to adjust.
  • Food safety comes from internal temperature, not time. Check meat, poultry, seafood and leftovers against the USDA safe minimum temperatures.
  • Packaging wins. If your box prints air fryer directions, follow them.

Frequently asked questions

How long do you air fry chicken wings?

About 26 minutes at 400°F (205°C) for raw, thawed wings, shaking every 8–10 minutes.

How do you get crispy wings in the air fryer?

Dry them well, toss with a little baking powder and salt, cook in a single layer and sauce them only after cooking.

Can you air fry frozen chicken wings?

Yes. Add 6–8 minutes, break the wings apart once they loosen, and check that they reach 165°F (74°C).

Times are starting points; air fryers vary. Always check doneness with a thermometer. Want everything on one page? See the air fryer cooking times chart.
