How Long to Cook Chicken Breast in the Air Fryer
By AnoyUpdated Last reviewed How we calculate
Cook a boneless, skinless chicken breast (about 8 oz) in the air fryer at 375°F (190°C) for 16–18 minutes, flipping halfway, until it reaches 165°F (74°C) inside. Baked in a conventional oven, the same breast takes about 22 minutes at 400°F.

How the oven directions convert
These air fryer directions come straight from the oven to air fryer converter using its “Most recipes” setting:
400°F − 25°F = 375°F · 22 min × 0.8 = 18 min · check at 16 min
Air fryers vary by model and basket load, so start checking at 16 minutes.
Step by step
- Pat the chicken dry. If one end is much thicker, pound it to an even thickness.
- Rub with oil and season.
- Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
- Air fry for 16–18 minutes, flipping halfway, until the thickest part reads 165°F (74°C).
- Rest for 5 minutes before slicing.
How to tell it’s done
Poultry is safe at 165°F (74°C) in the thickest part. Check with an instant-read thermometer in the thickest part; see theFoodSafety.gov safe minimum temperature chart.
Tips
- Size matters more than anything: a 6 oz breast can be done 4 minutes sooner than a 10 oz one.
- Frozen chicken breast: add about 50% to the time and check the temperature in several spots.
- Bone-in, skin-on breasts need about 20–25 minutes at the same temperature.

Accuracy and limitations
These times are starting points built from typical oven directions, converted with the same rules as the calculator. They are not lab measurements, and your food and appliance will differ.
- Appliances vary. Wattage, basket size and how close the element sits to the food change cooking speed. That’s why every result includes a “check at” time.
- Load matters. A full or stacked basket cooks more slowly than a single layer.
- Temperature limits. Many basket air fryers stop at 400°F (200°C). Converted settings above that are flagged.
- Poor fits for any formula: wet batters, delicate cakes, low-and-slow recipes and roasts over an hour. Use a thermometer and expect to adjust.
- Food safety comes from internal temperature, not time. Check meat, poultry, seafood and leftovers against the USDA safe minimum temperatures.
- Packaging wins. If your box prints air fryer directions, follow them.

Frequently asked questions
How long does chicken breast take in the air fryer?
An 8 oz boneless breast takes 16–18 minutes at 375°F (190°C). Always confirm 165°F (74°C) in the thickest part.
What temperature do you air fry chicken breast at?
375°F (190°C) is a good balance: hot enough to brown the outside before the middle dries out.
How do you keep air fryer chicken breast juicy?
Pound it to an even thickness, do not overcook it (pull it at 165°F), and rest it for 5 minutes before cutting.
Times are starting points; air fryers vary. Always check doneness with a thermometer. Want everything on one page? See the air fryer cooking times chart.
