Can You Put Plastic in the Oven or Air Fryer?
By AnoyUpdated Last reviewed How we calculate
No, unless the packaging clearly says the plastic tray is oven-safe. Ordinary plastic containers, wrap and bags melt or warp at baking temperatures. Some frozen meals come in special trays (often marked “oven-safe” or “dual-ovenable”); follow the package temperature limit and use them only in a conventional oven, not an air fryer.
In the oven
Only if labeled oven-safe
Only trays the package says are oven-safe, within the stated temperature. Everything else melts.
In the air fryer
No
The element is too close and the airflow too strong. Move food into a metal or oven-safe dish first.
What to avoid
- Plastic wrap, storage containers and bags.
- Takeout containers.
- Plastic utensils left in a dish.
Alternatives
- Move food to a metal pan, oven-safe glass or ceramic dish, or straight into the basket.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if plastic melts in the oven?
Turn the oven off, ventilate the kitchen, let it cool completely, then scrape off what you can. Discard any food it touched.
Can I put a frozen-meal tray in the air fryer?
Not usually. Trays are designed for ovens and microwaves, and an air fryer element sits much closer. Transfer the food to an oven-safe dish.
Are silicone and plastic the same?
No. Food-grade silicone is heat-resistant (usually to about 425–450°F) and is fine in ovens and air fryers. Plastic is not.
